Hair-smoothing products are used to straighten and relax unruly hair. They're usually applied to your hair followed by a heat treatment that seals the solution in. The results are usually amazing as I can attest after getting a Brazilian Blowout a few years back that was a summer game changer for me.

However, and there is a big however in here most of these products contain formaldehyde, a colorless gas that presents a health hazard when breathed into your lungs or gets in your eyes or on your skin. If the salon you visit does not properly ventilated both the salon professional and clients are at a risk of compromising their health.
Here's a few things you should be aware of before you get any straightening process done:
Skin sensitization or allergic dermatitis can develop after repeated contact with formaldehyde related ingredients. The greater exposure to these ingredients, the higher the potential risk.
Be sure to always read product labels so you know what the ingredients are. Brand are required to list ingredients and it they don't I wouldn't buy or try it.
Beyond the word formaldehyde stay away from formalin and methylene glycol.
Always ask your salon professional whether they know if something includes formaldehyde related ingredients. If they are unsure that's not a good sign. If you've had a reaction in the past (which happened to me and I ignored for years) do not use that product again. Reactions tend to be tell us we are allergic to whatever is being applied to our scalp so avoid anything that doesn't feel good.
I know for us curly haired gals these hair smoothing processes . really do make your hair more manageable, especially during high humidity months but with all I now know I've decoded tp fully embrace my curly locks, and just go natural.
